Mexico and the US
For the past two years Mexico has experienced extreme inner turmoil due to the situation with the drug cartels. Although the mexican government recently legalized all drugs the drug war has continued to ravage the country. The ongoing trade between South American cartels has made violence more rampant closer to the U.S. border. While the U.S. has not taken any official stand against these cartels, they still have a negative effect on certain parts of the U.S. This has brought about the question of whether we should intervene or not. Personally I believe that unless the U.S. is being seriously threatened that we do not have the right to march into another country and try to change it how we like. In this particular situation I think that the U.S. should only intervene in Mexico if Mexico requests our help, or if they approve of us being there. I think that in the long run helping mexico would benefit the U.S. by furthering our standing and good relations with Mexico and helping the U.S.' trade.

ReplyDeleteBut the United States is a big part of these drug wars, being some of the biggest drug customers and the gun supply being imported from the United States. Do you still think the United States should do nothing, even though they are involved?
ReplyDeleteI read an article about South American countries and drug cartels as well.
ReplyDeleteIt's actually funny because the U.S. is funding programs that are supposed to help in the battle against drugs in the countries with the worst amount of activity.
So far, from what I understand, our intervention is not helping.
Do you think we can really afford to try to intervene anymore than we already are?
well I´m agree about what you said because I´m so impress of how Mexico is going with drugs is horrible and not only in Mexico I´m sure taht in all the world to. But I think that it would be a very good idea that US can help us with this big problem an also he will help his own country, but I think that if US help us he will benefits a lot and it will have more popularity and more economy , Mexico is a beautiful country but I´m sure taht will help of US it will be better and with not too much corruption and narcotrafic. michelle peña mexico
ReplyDeleteFirst of all I want to mention that Mexico hasn't legalized all drugs as you said, what the government legalize was some king of drugs like marihuana and in certain amounts.
ReplyDeleteAs you had already said this is one of the biggest issues in our country and this problems is growing and growing. Mexican government has make a huge effort to solve the problem but it has not been enough because of the dimensions of it.
I'm actually agaisnt the US solving the problem inside Mexico because it will be agaisnt our sovereignty as a country. What the US has to do is to take action in its part of the problem and with this I'm reffering that you have to do something about the high drug consume in your country because if you stop this producer countries like Mexico and other Latin American countries will not have enough demand to keep the "business" alive. Other thing that the US can do is to stop weapon trafficking from your country to Mexico, Colombia etc. Because most of the weapons that the cartels have come from your country and this make them to have very sophisticated weapons sometimes more advance that the ones of the police in my country, so if you stop this drug cartels will not have weapons supplies and after this Mexican Army and Mexican Federal Police can win this "fight" agaisnt drugs cartels.

I agree of what yoy said that USA has nothing to do with it, unless Mexico ask for help.
ReplyDeleteBecause its supposed that Mexico knows what they are doing with all the legalizing they only legalized 2 or 3 kind of drugs, so we think that everything is under control, and its not time for USA to get involve in Mexico´s problems.

I agree with you that America should keep out of Mexico's affairs. This is a tough issue though since we are so close and easily effected by each other. Great job in writing this piece.
ReplyDeleteGood job using Mexico in order to explain your opinion inUS Foreign affairs. Well written.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everything you've stated although I have just one thing to add. I also believe that it would be crucial for the U.S to intervene if the problem continued onto our side of the border (which it already does, illegal drugs are smuggled in) because this new open policy with drugs in Mexico will overall also increase violence in accordance with drugs in the U.S. and that's when it becomes our issue as well as theirs.
ReplyDeleteWell not all the drugs have been legalized, just marihuana and with some policies attached, the problem is that Mexico is not the only one who’s having issues with the drug traficking, other countries in South America are facing this problems too, and all the countries involved in this business are linked to each other, that makes this a huge problem, because even though its supposed that the gobernment is facing the problem with cartels they’re not covering all around just a part and sometimes it turns out to be that the people that is supposed to take care of us (meaning the police) are the ones that traffic with the drugs; I know that our president is trying to do his best, but I think he should ask for help so that we can really end with this, there is a saying that says: the union is strenght and I do believe that.

I agree, U.S. has nothing to do with the problems here in Mexico, unless the Mexican government asks the U.S. for help. Mexico has been trying to stop the drug cartels by fighting against them, but obviously Mexican government can´t finish with a huge problem from one day to another.
ReplyDeleteIf the situation in Mexico keeps getting worse maybe the Mexican government should ask for help to stop this problem.

Well I agree with you, I really think that U.S. must not interfere with the problems that Mexico is facing right now, such as the drug cartels, which it has become one of the most important problems in this days. Another important thing to mention is that the only drug that is legalized is marihuana, and not all as you said, but although this one is affecting as well. I know Mexico and the president are doing the best for ending this kind of problems, but like you said, maybe we borrow some help.

Mexico's problems due to drugs go way back. It grew and grew mostly because of the government's corruption. Most drugs have been legalized as you said, but in very small quantities, that is to say, personal doses. In my opinion this is irrelevant because the drug cartels' real business is not here in Mexico. The US is probably the biggest drug consumer and weapon supplier worldwide. Some say that it's Mexico's job to stop these cartels, however it will be impossible for the Mexican government to do so without international aid. As far as I know negotiations have been taking place between the DEA, US army, other US agencies, and the mexican government. I strongly believe that even if Mexico doesn't ask for help the US should offer it. If this support comes it will have to be managed by mexican authorities. By doing this there is some hope in stopping drug cartels and hundreds of executions every year.

First I want to say that Mexico has not legalized all drugs only marihuana, and there are some rules to use this drug. I think drug cartels is affecting our country a lot and is the most important problem right now, but I have to say that our president Felipe Calderon is fighting a lot for this, he has sent a lot of militar movements to Michoacan where drug cartels are giving serious problems, but the mexican army is not even the half of people that the drug cartels have, and they have really advanced weapons thing that the mexican army doesn't. U.S. has to stop the weapon trafficking because they are providing this advanced weapons to the drug cartels. This problem is not happening only in our country in Colombia there are strong drug cartels too. The drugs cartel are giving our country a lot of insecurity.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you that U.S. can provide us help obviously if the mexican government approves this. I think this could benefit both of us and this would provide us a better relationship.

First of all Mexico hasn´t legalized all drugs, it only legalized some drugs like marihuana but with some restrictions of quantity. How can we fight with drug trafficking if U.S is one of the principal producers of weapons? This weapons are very sophisticated. It is not a problem of Mexico is a common problem that has to be faced in common, between the U.S. and Mexico, All this is related because if they sell us weapons the drug trafficking grows more. The president´s government deployed 36,000 soldiers and thousands of policemen in the hottest points of action of the drug cartels. He is fighting with drug´s movement into the northern neighbor. In a war for control of the U.S. market, had left more than 5,300 executions in 2008 and about 1,100 so far in 2009.I think that is very important that U.S help us, beginning with the consume of drugs in their country because is like a cycle and if they never fight with this, Mexico will have more drug cartels.

The relation with Mexico is very important, because we are neighboors and also because we have agreement and mutual benefits.
ReplyDeleteI'm agree that the drug trafficking is a great problem, but the president already this trying to solve it and second the drugs it is true that are legal, but not all, and the ones that are legal, the quantity is restricted.
in the other hand Mexico is not the only one country of this drug trafficker's network also many South American countries and obvious Mexico is in the midle so drug get throw us, to make it´s way to US. Then first that we have to make an agreement that involved all america against this problem.
And the help if Mexico is not request, so first i think US have to solve their own problems.
